I DISAGREE WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA (C) 2013 by Wayne Dan Lewis, Sr.

Sending a letter to The White House

Housekeeping

I disagree with President Obama.  About what?  Anything! Everything! Does it matter?  Who cares?  Does even he care if I, an ordinary, average citizen disagree with whether he signs off on increasing the minimum wage?  Is it going to cause the President of the United States of America to rethink his policies on Syria if I disagree with him?  I don’t think it will, but there is more at stake here.  It is not if I agree or disagree with him, it is how I disagree with him that seems to make the most impact.  Briefly, let’s look at 2 things.  What do we disagree with the leader of the free world, and how do we make it known.  Why do we want to this?  Well, if we can put together an approach to letting the leader of our country know that we are dissatisfied with a given policy, or his stance on an important issue, then it should be a piece of cake to send a message to a member of the House of Representatives (Congress or Senate), or to a Cabinet Secretary.  Or, if you have really an important issue, maybe to the First Lady, let her know that you don’t like eating your greens, and don’t appreciate her forcing them on you.

The point here is that President Obama and the First Lady, Mrs Obama, are people.  They are adults.  They have endured the taunts, the insults and the question of their competence from every level of our society.  Many of their most unflattering comments were no doubt made through hecklers, letters to the White House directly, emails, and maybe even a tweet or two.  From the moment Mr. Obama stepped out of the expected protocol of intervening in an arrest for a former colleague in Cambridge Massachussetts,[1] to his position on raising the minimum wage,[2] or his patented, signature legislation, the Affordable Healthcare Act of 2013,[3] or as it is affectionately referred to: OBAMACARE, there have been no shortage of us who disagree with some aspect of his administration.

An important point to make here, is that to disagree is not to hate, or dislike the president.  That seems to be a common misperception.  Not only politically, but personally among the many of us.  It is unfortunate that we cannot distinguish our disagreements from our personal affections with one another.  To be clear, nothing here shall be presumed to suggest that there is any dislike, or lack of love for the President and his wife, Michelle Obama.  We owe it to ourselves to be civil in all of our disagreements, and look forward to a win-win approach that benefits all.

What’s the Walk Away Here?
Hopefully, the expected walk away here is that with the remainder of his time in office, for those of us who have a disagreement with the President, we will not resort to the under-the-breath complaints about what is wrong in our government, particularly under President Obama’s leadership.  Nor, in our disgust, should we depend on the hope that President Obama will “do the right thing”.  Government is interactive.  President Obama is not perfect, and will not necessarily act perfectly according to everyone’s wishes.  With that said, President Obama is possibly one of the most approachable leaders we will ever have.  Will he respond directly, I think that he will.  I believe that President Obama will send a response to a constructively-worded inquiry, or constructively-worded criticism of his position(s) on healthcare, or the decision to keep troops in Afghanistan past 2014.[4]  I believe that President Obama is willing to hear that we disapprove of how he works, or fails to work with Congress[5] by continuing to previously extend the budgets in a piece-meal approach (until this year 2013).  The question is, what message are you willing to send to the President?  And, are you prepared to make your thoughts known?  If you are, here are suggested ways of getting your message to him, as suggested by the White House’s website:
©     The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

What are your thoughts about your country?
Now that you have a way to contact to President Obama, what are you prepared to say to the President of the United States?
Are you willing to send a message, telling him how much you disagree with:
The Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare)?[6]
Raising the Minimum Wage?[7]
Drones over the United States?[8] Or,
Or his relationship with Congress?

Whatever you decide to focus on, remember it is just a briefly worded message (2500 words or less) stating your position on an issue of value to not only you, but to your family and community as well.  While you may know what to say, it would help if you involved a trusted friend or family member to preview your message.  If we happened to be a little bitter in our address, we may come on as too strong.  We always want to appear respective of not only the Office of the President of the United States, but the President, himself.  The point is to get a message across, with possibly a solution.  It makes no sense to voice a discontent if one does not contain a solution that you believe could work.  Remember, there is no need to look for positive feedback if the message coming across is negative.

I disagree with President Obama
Below, is the approximate text of a message I send to President Obama today (12/16/13).  I sent it through the White House.gov’s site.  While I do expect a response, it will most likely come after January 20, 2014, after his State of the Union address.  Anytime sooner, would be a big surprise to me.  But in any event, I wanted to send a message and hope that you too will be inspired to send a positive message to the President to let him know your feelings on issues of importance to you.
Here is what I sent relating to the Federal Minimum Wage:

Subject:  Raising the Minimum Wage[9]
President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Re: The Federal Minimum Wage

Dear Mr. President,
I hope this letter finds you and your family in the best of health.  I am sending this letter to let you know that I believe that your support for an increase in the Federal Minimum Wage without a savings plan is counter-productive.

I agree with you, Mr. President, a decent living wage should be paid to everyone.  But, I can only agree to the point that increasing the minimum wage should not be without providing a government-backed savings plan to help those in low-paying jobs build wealth for themselves and their families.

Mr. President, there are not enough training facilities in our communities.  In New Orleans alone, training facilities that once numbered well into the teens, are now fewer since Hurricane Katrina.  We need training facilities in New Orleans that help young people who don’t have to go to college, learn a valuable trade that pays them for their skills.  For example:  Welders, Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Computer Technologists, Nursing, X-Ray Technicians and other meaningful, skill-leveled positions that improve the motivated person, where they can get paid according to what they bring to the table, as opposed to causing businesses to be forced to increase wages, while affecting their profits.

Can we have both?  It’s possible, but small businesses should not be punished.  Minimum wage earners can’t continue to depend on jobs that are going to be gone in the next 10 years, and then have no skills to fall back on.  This is the foreseeable future, and it is important that if the government can make an impact, this is that opportunity.  Please provide training facilities to help prepare our communities with sustainable skills and jobs.

I hope that you will give this great consideration, Mr. President.
Your time is greatly appreciated.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, the First Lady, Sasha and Malia.

Sincerely,

Wayne D. Lewis, Sr.

The above letter was recently submitted to the White House.  While many of you may not agree with the sentiments (send me a note), I hope that if you have a position on this or any other matter of a political nature, that you will forward it to the White House, or your Congressman or Senator.  I hope that you will begin to make it known to many of your respective representatives  that you are either pleased, dissatisfied, or confused about matters that affect you, your families and your communities.  The days of allowing your representatives to operate on cruise control should be coming to an end, fairly soon.

In the upcoming elections of 2014, and beyond, there will be a groundswell of voices, letters, emails, tweets, and facebook posts, just to name just a few means of communications, that will rise to the occasion for our fellow citizens to be heard. If we have been paying attention, we know that voices are being suppressed, citizens are being denied, and the constitutionality of what is to come may never come to be challenged in a court of law because of the number of challenges on so many fronts for each of us as citizens.  But thanks to American technology,  Americans are no longer going to sit down and allow political leaders to dictate to them who and what to vote for.  It is extremely important that each of us realize that our votes, as well as our voices need no longer be hushed, or silenced.  We need to speak up, and let the world know that we are in this, full bore, because we are all American citizens.

Each of us owe it to ourselves and the future of all that we hold dear, to speak out, to say what we want, and to say to our representatives, “I disagree with you on this issue: …..”, and here is why, and here is what I hope you will take into consideration.  Whether our representatives will respond is a matter altogether different.  But until, or unless we speak out by whatever means available, the future that could be, won’t be, because too many of us will have chosen to be silent, and hoped that our representatives will have done the right thing.  Good luck with that.

I disagree with President Obama is perhaps an first chance opportunity for each of us to realize how important our voices are.  I can only hope that President Obama responds early next year to my letter.  When he does, I will share it with you in a future post.  But more importantly, I hope that you will have response as well to share.  I hope that you send a letter to your respective representative and let them know that you are watching them on the matter of the Troops in Afghanistan; that you are watching them on the passage of the unemployment insurance, or that you are watching them on how the Affordable Healthcare Program is going, and that you want results.  Send your letters.  Follow your representatives on Twitter,[10] on Facebook,[11] or on LinkedIn[12].  No longer take for granted that any of our representatives are going to do the right thing.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

YOU DON’T KNOW WHO YOU’RE MESSING WITH © 2013 by Wayne Dan Lewis, Sr.

How do we correct an America that is like a teen-aged girl?
As parents of daughters, especially teen-aged daughters, we know the challenges that we have faced or, are facing.  And if we are parents of boy(s) and girl(s), we know that there are differences as they both come of age.  My point of reference here is to focus on raising a teen-aged girl.  Why?  It would be relative as we discuss America and her continuing development as a country.  At an approximate age of 237 years old, that should make America a teenager in comparison to many of our earlier and older civilizations.  Therefore, America can claim a very young status as a country that is still growing, and is still in need of nurturing, and guidance.  But who is going to guide America?  Who is going to tell America when she is doing well, and when she is doing wrong?  And is America, like so many of our teenagers in general, so involved, so obsessed with not being told what to do, that no one can tell her anything?  Even her own citizens?

If we are citizens, particularly those of us who vote, we have to appreciate our roles in America to a greater degree.  If we are cognizant of the wrongs that our country is doing, and we would like to see America at her best, then we have to take the same position as we would for our teen-aged daughter,  especially if we love her.  And I would like to believe that we all do love America, our country.  And if we love her, we have to be prepared to take measured, corrective steps equivalent to taking America over our collective knee in order let America know that her attitude is becoming her downfall.   As parents, we sometimes have to take pro-active steps to correct our children, who sometimes think that they are too big to be corrected.  So it seems with America

The proverbial phrase that continues to haunt me, even as it only applied to one point in time of American history is, “Too Big To Fail!”  We should never allow America to believe that this applies to her.   As parents, we have to sometimes take steps to remind our children, that they are not too big to be taken out to the woodshed.  We often have to remind our children that their behavior may sometimes be counter-productive, and that if our children don’t straighten up and fly right, that they could be headed down a very dangerous path.

And so the same has to be said for our country, our America.  That if she (America) doesn’t straighten up and fly right, that she is putting herself and all that she holds dear in grave danger not only within her own borders, but also abroad.  It is just as important to remind America, the way that we might remind our children, that everyone is not supportive of who they are, even if someone smiles in your face.  It is just as important to remind America, the way that we remind our children, that someone is waiting for them to fail.  And as quiet as it may be kept, they may be aware of our children’s impending doom and will not dare say one word to save them from themselves.  Why wouldn’t someone save them from themselves?  Because of arrogance; because one presents themselves as too full of oneself,  or that our children present themselves as having an attitude of superiority that is only self-serving, and condescending.  If this behavior would apply to your daughter, whom we love so dearly, wouldn’t you tell her?  Would you not risk the love between the two of you and warn her that she carries herself precariously close to self-destruction, and that if she wants to be the very best that she can be, she needs to change her attitude soon, if not sooner.  So it behoove us, as parents, the same way it behoove us as citizens, to take America over our collective knee and give her a  stern disciplinary talking to.   Two questions:

  1. How do we as citizens discipline our country?
  2. What is it that is most critical at this time that we should take America over our knee and remind her to change her attitude?

Question #2, first
I’ll take the second question first.  There are any number of things that may jump out at us as citizens of this great country.  But for the sake of time, I will only focus on these four things:
    1. National Security
    2. Mental Health
    3. Racism and Discrimination
    4. Economic empowerment.

National Security
With respect to National Security, that for an ordinary citizen like myself, I should not have to worry about our nation’s security.  But here we are, as a lone individual possesses extremely valuable information, that almost day-by-day, information is being released, indicating that America has been spying on other countries.  Is that news in itself? No, it isn’t.  Should the spying stop?  No, it shouldn’t.  But the fact remains that this discovery poses a tremendous threat to our national security and that if all indications are correct, America stands to loose her credibility with the world at large.  America stands at a disadvantage because whether guilty or not, she has been allegedly caught.  But why did this happen in the first place?  It happened because of America’s arrogance and attitude about the power that she possesses.

Edward Snowden[1] is supposedly a lone American citizen, working as an independent
contractor for the NSA[2].  As we understand, it was job to handle classified information.  However, he subsequently obtained, funneled and/or sought to disclose the classified information under his control and began to reveal the information that he obtained, supposedly with the intent of sharing this information illegally, that he alleges was improper information for America to have access to, or to be conducting surveillance activity on American citizens and abroad.  The end result is a continuing one.

Edward Snowden is a wanted man and maybe tried for treason, even in absentia.  Others may consider him a hero.  But that is neither here nor there as to whether Edward Snowden is a hero or a federal criminal, in this aspect.  What is more important is that there is an Edward Snowden.  Are there more Edward Snowden’s?  And if so, what is America doing to ensure that there are no more Edward Snowden’s?

Our National Security, as we all know, does not rely on, nor is it just limited to the men and women in our various military branches.  It is each of us, taking a progressive and pro-active role in ensuring that America’s interests are never compromised for personal gain.  The fact that it has been, when there are supposedly safeguards in place to prevent an Edward Snowden from acting alone, or in accord with any other rogue figures, suggests that safeguards were disregarded; that standards were lowered, and that the well-being of every American citizens was put out for the lowest bidder.  This is the suggestion, and America, if she is not taking note, that this seemingly lone agent, in the form of Edward Snowden, should cause America to realize that she is not so powerful, that her own internal safeguards can be compromised from within.  And of course, we can’t forget 9/11[3]America cannot take for granted the safety of her American citizens, or her allies abroad.

Mental Illness
Texas Republican Congressman and Tea Party favorite, Ted Cruz[4], lead a 21 hour filibuster to prevent the Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA) from being implemented.  So much so, that his goal(s) were to have the AHCA defunded, delayed, or repealed, if possible.  Congressman Cruz’s efforts failed, but he fought vigorously to see his goals realized even leading the way for a 15 day Government shutdown.  Some believe that he had a personal agenda, but not a real plan before having a role in shutting down the government of the United States, and perhaps, putting the nation’s economy at risk, locally and abroad.  Others may consider him a hero.

Perhaps there is no correlation between Edward Snowden and Representative Cruz.  But they are both one individual, who in today’s America, represent a new kind of perceived hero.  Both of these men represent two extremes in American history.  Together, they represent how easy it is to gain the attention and perhaps, the control of this country.  Whether one is trying to tackle an issue on the floor of the House of Representatives, or the other is trying to gain the attention of the world by revealing classified national secrets, there is evidence, however slight, that we, as American citizens don’t take our leadership seriously.  The issue of Mental Health is important here because as much as Representative Cruz leads the issue on repealing or delaying healthcare across the board, an issue that hardly gets the needed attention is the mental well-being of America’s citizens.   It can be readily presumed that if Representative stands so firmly in the way of American citizens having an opportunity at general health care, that he perhaps stands just as steadfast in preventing need healthcare for those who suffer from mental illness.

It is unfortunate that I have to do this, but I have to state that I am not a psychiatrist and therefore cannot speak on mental health in terms of treatment, or what is actually mental illness from a medical standpoint.  The upside, if I may so, is that my adopted mother suffered from mental illness, therefore, I have a personal point of reference, and if the perception of mental illness today was present when I was adopted, then I wouldn’t have been adopted by a family member.  This is not to say that the stigma of mental illness didn’t exist, but the facilities were more plentiful, and willing to provide care for those in need.

Today, mental health facilities are being closed.  And as I referenced Representative Ted Cruz and his leadership earlier, I am convinced that mental illness will be one of the fallouts of programs that the Affordable Healthcare program is designed to help if the good representative ever gets his way.   It is my contention that Representative Cruz will continue to work to ensure that those who need help of every kind, will target mental illness because the state budgets have already begun the initial cuts to programs that help those in need of mental health care.

If mental illness continues to be the target of budget cuts across this nation, and eventually be denied because the Affordable Healthcare Act is eventually repealed, we will have seen nothing compared to the many mass shootings and killings that are going on throughout our nation.  As a country, we can’t begin, or continue to take for granted those whose lives depend on mental health, while placing an undue burden on police officers whose apparent response to mental health patients acting out is to arrest if possible, or to shoot them as a last alternative-case solved.

America has to do better. She cannot continue to reach out to the world with millions of dollars to help other nations to rebuild their various communities while disregarding her own citizens’ mental well-being.

Racism and Discrimination
Many may contend that America is now post-racial.  It is a cutsy term, but it is a fallacy even as America has her first Person of Color as Commander in Chief.  It is my contention that despite being elected for 2 terms, that America is on a non-stop mission to ensure that not one more Person of Color ever sets foot, or sits in the Oval Office who is not a white male.  This perceived attitude by America opens the door to whether America is going to open her mind to allowing any other sex into the Office of President, i.e. a woman.  But I have already addressed the idea of a woman for president in an earlier blog post: Formula for Selecting A Female Presidential Candidate © 2012 by Wayne D. Lewis, Sr.[5]   Today, it is about racism and America’s refusal to acknowledge that she is as racist today as she was 200 years ago.  It is about the racism that America believes is under control despite her highest incarceration rate includes predominantly African America males.  It is about America’s quickness to keep People of Color out of employment with limited, if any DBE contracts, and condemning those same people who are by and large are denied working opportunities.  It is about racism and discrimination in America because she acts with total abandonment in throwing drugs and guns in economically-created depressed areas and building jails for the impending aftermath.

America’s is repeating her role, as she did with Native Americans, of ensuring that anyone who is non-white, or a non-white male is no longer a threat to the future white domination.  If this is not true, then let anyone deny it.  But there is a reason why it should be true.  It is true because this is a country built on a dream.  And that dream did not include having anyone whose ancestry was anywhere other than Great Britain, Spain, France, or even Germany.  All others, step off.

This perception that I have of America, is that the White Elephant in the room (racism and discrimination) needs to be addressed, if America is going to move forward.  It is not personal, it is reality.  If this is a misperception held by someone as simple as me, I can only imagine greater minds who are reading the writing on the wall, that this America cannot continue moving forward as long as the perception is that White America believes that in the 237 years of this country’s existence, that everything will remain as it has always has been, and that everyone is going to roll over and play dead.  America can be better than the racist and discriminatory behavior that it continues exhibit towards black and brown people.   America can’t continue to move forward as long as she discriminates against those who are of different religions other than Christian.  America can’t continue to move forward as long as she discriminates against those with mixed sexual orientation.  American can’t move forward along as she continues to discriminate against those whose party affiliations is other than Democrat or Republican.  This is not the America that the founding fathers envisioned when they left Great Britain, according to the Constitution that is the guiding force for this country.  Correct me, if I am wrong.  But don’t bother to correct me if being wrong, being racist, or being discriminatory is the best that America would rather be.

This maybe this country’s teenage years, but it is time for it to mature and allow everyone, regardless of race, regardless of religion, regardless of nationality, creed or color, who are in effect, America citizens, to be the best that they can be.

Economic Empowerment
This is a great country.  Everything that a country can be, America has the potential to achieve.  Potential is the key word here.  It is amazing that there are so many systems in place in this country for people to save, invest, or to perhaps just spend day in and day out, and still not need to fall behind on their bills.  This country is built on the premise that if jobs are created, people can work.  This country is built on the premise that there is no need for anyone not to be able to lift a bale of hay; pick up trash along the side of the road, or to work on a scaffold 30 to 100 floors above the ground.

The United States of America holds the promise, that for each and every person who wants to, they can feed every set of mouths in their household.  It holds the promise that whatever we want to be, we can be that because each and everyone, from the President of the United States down to the City Representative/Councilmember will be doing everything possible and necessary to help us achieve our Global Dream.  Note, our Global Dream.  We can no longer have an American Dream, we must dream globally.  But know that America is our base of operation.  Know that as we strive to achieve that which we seek to accomplish, America is going to put everything in place for us to be scientists, educators, doctors, engineers, fast food workers, entrepreneurs, mechanics, or linemen.

America has failed when it puts systems in place that allows those who can work to collect checks and not work for all they are worth.  America has failed when those who can work can sit on their behinds and live at the expense of those who do work.  America will continue to fail however, if she seeks to cut off those whom she has enslaved to welfare, but fails to provide training to prepare those recipients for a transition to financial independence.  But America can redeem herself, if she wants to.  She can open doors to educational institutions, if she wants to.

America can, if she wants to, open doors to training institutions that prepare those who desire to be medical technologists, phlebotomists’, nurses and x-ray techs.  American can, if she wants to, open the doors to training institutions that train auto mechanics, carpenters, electricians, HVAC technicians, welders, or aerospace engineers, for whomever has the aptitude and the attitude to achieve their Global Dreams, in addition to the American Dream.

Her mission, should she decide to accept it, is for America to open the doors of prosperity to every American citizen.  Her mission, should she decide to accept it, is for America to cease and desist in making any American feel like they are worth so much less than they are.  Her mission, should she decide to accept it, is for America to focus on the prosperity that is the basis for every person’s dream who  crosses the Atlantic Ocean; who crosses the Caribbean Sea; who crosses the Mexican Border; who crosses the Pacific Ocean; or who crosses the Canadian Border, and do legally in every case.  America is capable of accepting that mission and then some, if she wants to, but first, America has to loose the attitude.  America has to loose the arrogance.

 Question #1, secondly
In discussing any problems, it is not enough to say what the problem is.  There must be solutions.  Anyone can complain.  So our first question was: How do we as citizens discipline our country?

Theoretically, any solution should be given every consideration in that the solution itself does not lead to another problem, or a greater problem than what is currently on the table.  Additionally, the comparison between a teenaged girl, may serve well as an analogy, but America, despite her youth, comparatively, and as often referred to as “she” possesses few qualities of a human.  But that doesn’t stop her from being humane and/or compassionate.  Despite not being a human in any form, it does not stop America from reaching out to her citizens for the guidance that she needs to be a greater nation.  So how does we correct our country?

I think that first and foremost, it is important that America opens herself to being corrected.  But, it is also important that we offer constructive, corrective action that America is able to digest, and see not only the errors of her ways, but also buys into what is best for her citizens within her shores, and for her allies abroad.   The corrective action can best be measured in the way that we change our attitudes towards voting.   Essentially, we should all vote.  For America’s part, do not work to suppress or deny any one citizen’s right to vote.

Additionally, as citizens, we must change our attitudes about voting that we don’t continue to vote the same way, for the same people, for the same dynasties that work to build an America built on divisiveness and poverty-based programs.  Look for and demand of our leaders that business as usual is no longer the order of the day.  While we can’t speak face to face with America, our voting speaks volumes when we show up at the voting booths, ready to vote for new leadership, that is ready to fulfill America’s original promise of prosperity for all who are willing to earn and work for it.

In Conclusion
Many a teen-aged girl is perhaps wondering about who she is going to the prom.  Perhaps, she is worried about the pimples coming on her face at the worst possible time, just when she is about to meet someone very special.  To be truthful, a pretty teen girl rarely has little to worry about with whom she is going to go the prom.  It is practically a foregone conclusion that she is either going with the Captain of the football team, or the most popular guy in school.  For the very attractive, yet tomboyish girl, she will most likely wear under that pretty, frilly gown that makes her look like a daddy’s little girl, a pair of tattered blue jeans, a tank-top or t-shirt, and have at the ready, a pair of high ankle sneakers for after an event that she is only using as a means to an end for the night of her life.  Well, America is no different.

America is still young, growing, and beautiful.  She possess so much to give to not only her citizens, but to the world at large.  But with the gifts that she possess, America cannot be allowed to be self-serving to the point that only a select few can benefit from her natural and economic gifts.  America cannot afford to grow in a destructive manner where she disregards her safety by ignoring the standards that she put in place to keep her borders safe from outside attacks, whether by air, land, sea, and now technologically.  America must be reminded that her gifts can be retained, if not doubled when she looks after those who cannot look out for themselves, such as our citizens who suffer from Mental Illness.  Our approach to voting, can change that.

It is up to us as citizens, to remind America as a whole, that her continued obsession with Racism and Discrimination is on full display, and that the world is watching.  That if America continues to exercise the high level of racism and discrimination through incarceration, employment and voter suppression, that she can no longer hold herself out as a epitome or beacon for human rights.  The world is watching, and the world will no longer honor America as the leader that she claims herself to be.  Our approach to voting, can change that.

Last, but not least, Economic Prosperity.  It is what we all desire.  It is what we all deserve.  The fact that America’s homelessness exists at so high a rate is ludicrous.  It is ridiculous.  We are better than this!  America is better than this!  We could reduce our homeless population tomorrow, if we brought back the jobs from China, India, or any other population that superimposes “American Made” on imported goods.  We could shorten employment lines for which businesses say that there is no one who is willing to work.  America is better than the unemployment rate of 7.2%.  We can change that tomorrow if training facilities opened on the borders of bankrupt or nearly bankrupt cities and towns.  We can change all of this, with out approach to voting.

Correcting a country is a tremendous risk, especially when that country is ours.  Especially, when that country is the United States of America.  But if we love our country, we will risk correcting and pointing out areas where she needs to improve.  If we love America, and we want to see her prosper, the same way that we would want your teenaged daughter to succeed in her life, we will lovingly, and thoughtfully, take America over our collective knee.  We will send her a message at the ballot box, that among the things we would like to see improvement on is:
v     not closing our country down like it’s a corner grocery store and putting our national security at risk;
v     treating our mentally ill with compassion and providing them needed help;
v     putting aside racist and discriminatory behavior and,
v     making sure our country is the best that it can possibly be by ensuring prosperity for all.
We can change all of this, with our approach to voting.  That is how I propose we correct our country, this teenager who has the greatest potential to be the best country in the world.

YOUR HEALTH OR YOUR LIFE[1] © 2013 by Wayne Dan Lewis, Sr.

What is this?
I don’t usually like to start off this way, but for all intents and purposes, this post should not be considered an economic, medical, or sociological report or advice on what to choose, or how to proceed in matters relating to you and your family’s health.  Please consult your respective medical professional. This post is a commentary on the perception of Healthcare in America, here in 2013.  With so many components to healthcare in America, it is difficult to narrow down a position that addresses the need for not only affordable healthcare, but healthcare at all, here in America.

To those of us, who can barely afford health insurance costs, let alone the associated healthcare costs (deductibles, tests, co-pays) the decisions on what will work best for us, may not be made at the kitchen table.  It is a good possibility that the affordability, irrespective of the Affordable Healthcare Act[2], will be made by our federal and state legislators, many of whom maybe exempt from the very laws that they pass for us as constituents[3].   Lawmakers’ greatest influence will no doubt be, insurance companies who work feverishly to protect themselves as well from the rising costs of medical care, understandably, on one hand.  However on the other hand, do insurance companies really provide a service when it comes to providing healthcare coverage when those in need aren’t able to get the needed protection that they bought into?  Our influence as consumers, however slight, will come down to how well we affect an influential, albeit opposing, countermeasure to how our insurance coverage meets our needs and too, have as great as if not greater influence on those who ultimately set laws and policies.  It is literally a battle for each of us, and we have to be relentless in every aspect of fighting for favorable, effective and efficient healthcare coverage.  It is literally a matter of life or health.

I share this perspective not because I am fully informed, but because I am afraid, and (did I say confused already?) want to know what will be the best option for me and my family going forward.  The word “reform” has a positive connotation to it when used to encourage us as voters as a need for change, but underneath the surface, the term reform suggests to the greatest degree that something I need will cost more, be denied, or will require more stringent guidelines be followed, and of course, paperwork to be completed by patients, doctor and other healthcare providers and servicers.  It is frightening and confusing for this consumer.

The Solution:
Even if we can’t agree on what the answer is, or how to handle it, the solution will come down to which group of citizens voice their concerns the greatest.  When we look at how attitudes about healthcare have changed in the last 4 to 6 years alone, it is important to understand that a lot of emails, letters, and phone calls were made to senators and congressional representatives, who may have listened, and who may have acted reasonably enough to bring about the changes that we are now seeing taking place.  The solution is plain and simple, get out and make your voices heard.

Knowing the Terrain
When we sit in our doctors offices and emergency rooms, we generally have one objective:  to stay well, or get well.  The decisions made between us and our doctors, seemingly confidentially, are being fed into computers and are being analyzed and re-analyzed by our doctors and the insurance companies.  The doctors have to be sure to code our records properly insure that they are administering the best in medical care, per our insurance program.  Insurance companies, whom many of us pay, and whom many of us believe that we have paid handsomely, look very closely to see where their dollars are being applied so as not to overpay or pay at all for an aspect of our care, that, God-forbid, isn’t life threatening, but nevertheless, must not be paid for out of their funds, that we paid into.  Confusing?  It appears to be no accident, if any of us are confused.  It appears to be by design.  The insurance business is a service. And that service is ever changing, little by little to little by little.  As consumers of the service of insurance, we are the ones who have to decide what illness to have in order to be sure that we are covered.  It’s like a 3-way game of Chest between us, our doctors and the insurance companies, with the insurance companies seemingly having the upper hand.  And the upper hand extends to our legislators and congressional representatives, apparently.

Knowing all of this may seem insignificant, but it should help us understand that when we sit in the doctor’s offices, or in the ER, that our health is not really determined by how deeply we take a breath on the examining table, or by the fact that we tell the doctor where it hurts.  It is determined by how much our legislators listen to insurance lobbyists, and for us, it may appear best if we just stay at home and take a bottle of pills.  For the insurance companies, that would be great, as long as we continue to pay our premiums.  For the doctors and nurses, not so good.  And for us, well, it comes down to our health or our lives, and the odds don’t appear to be in favor of our health, financially.

Overview (selective)
In a country with a quickly rising aging population, myself included, it is extremely evident that the debate of how to provide adequate and affordable healthcare is a discussion that can’t be disregarded, or passed on to the next generation.  The next generation is here, and they, unsuspectingly, maybe the most affected by the decisions being made today.  That “next generation” must also be encouraged to get on the phone, do emails, or even tweet their concerns, now more than ever, about the rising costs of healthcare, and the growing limited availability, “Obamacare”[4] notwithstanding.

For many of our politicians, it will be easy to take healthcare off of the table for the next generation because like so many young people, unless they are catastrophically ill, whatever is done to healthcare in America will not affect them for some time to come.  Our young people, bless their hearts, could be unaware how quickly their lives can change, and how disconnected they maybe to the actions of today that will affect them tomorrow.

Here is an overview of what many of us face with respect to healthcare (in no set order):

  • Employer paid benefits-  group insurance plans where employers pay better than possibly a 1/3 or more of the employee monthly premiums, are not beyond looking for a reasonable means of reducing their costs in employee assistance in order to protect their business investment(s). For employees, it is not out of the possibility that they may face a reduction in their full-time status where employers would no longer have to pay any portion of their insurance coverage.  Employees, if they so desire, would have to pay the entire premium through COBRA (The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) [5], further cutting into their take-home pay;

  • Cuts to Mental Health Services-[6] The crucial need for mental health care can never be understated.  Many healthcare providers and caregivers are overwhelmed with trying to maintain quality services when it comes to treating those who are mentally ill. And yet, cuts are coming profusively when it comes to mental healthcare.

  • Disabled American citizens -who receive any form of governmental assistance are not exempt either from consideration for having a reduction or discontinuing of healthcare benefits when the budget axe is swung, almost blindly, and without concern.

  • Medicaid Coverage-is now, more than ever, under the budget magnifying glass.  For those who have receive this “free” form of healthcare coverage, be on the lookout that in the not too distant future, recipients maybe cut off, or the requirements maybe amended so that in order to receive Medicaid benefits, individuals and families will have to meet more stringent requirements.

  • Catastrophic Illness-for any of us, can practically wipe out our life savings.  It can put us “on the street” to the point where we could find ourselves not knowing where our next meal is coming from, to say nothing of how it may affect our families.

This overview maybe speculative at best, but the history is there.  The discussions that continue are in place to reduce or eliminate healthcare coverage, at whatever cost possible, and for many of us, whether employed, military, or disabled, it will matter not based on compassion, but on the bottom line.

The Solution-again
Contrary to popular belief, writing your state or federal representatives does work.  The key to voicing our concerns is knowing what to focus on, and being persistent.  Another key component in addressing our concerns is through a group of individuals or associations that share in the concerns that are most vital to us.

Perhaps no part of the above overview is relevant to anyone of us.  That is a good possibility.  If anyone of us is in good physical health, have great genes, and don’t fear the wrath of nature (heart attack, cancer, stroke, or any other life-changing illness or disease), then perhaps this perspective is of no consequence.  But there are a number of us who face issues that are happening everyday.   Many of us face heart attacks, prostrate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, strokes, mental illness and more than our share of catastrophic illnesses, that insurance companies are not likely to cover, or cover at the very least.

What do we know or need to know?
It literally comes down to our health or our lives, despite the fact that the Affordable Healthcare Act[7] is supposed to cater to all of our medical needs, in theory.  But the problem is that we will be forced to decide between truly affordable healthcare or none at all.  While we are aware that the Affordable Healthcare Act is supposed to kick-in in full by 2014, it is still unclear how we will be protected.  All we know is that it shouldn’t pay for abortions, and that if we don’t buy health insurance, we will be penalized.  What we also are aware of is that employers (with over 50 employees) may take the option to layoff employees in order to avoid meeting the requirements of The Act.

What we need to know is that there will be no ambiguity in terms of what the Affordable Healthcare Act promises.  We need to know that any existing illnesses will be covered.  We need to know that we aren’t going to be denied coverage for an unconventional illness, or a need for surgery that could save our lives.  Last, but not least, we need to know that our children will be covered without being stuck between a rock and a hard place because the criterion isn’t clear as to what needs to be brought before the doctor 11:59p.m. December 31, 2013 and 12:01, January 1, 2014.

We need to know that we are not being thrown to the wolves because our employers decide not to pay for our coverage.  We need to know that we are not going to be thrown under the bus  as our lives perceivably hang in the balance because all of a sudden, we are responsible for a $500.00 monthly insurance premium as opposed to the previously understood amount of $195.00 monthly, for example.   We need to know that our representatives are looking out for us, but we also need to know how to contact our representatives, now more than ever, because it appears that healthcare, as we currently know it, is about to head for the sunset, and many of us, regardless of whether we are healthy, or facing a catastrophic illness, may be sitting in the waiting rooms of hospitals and doctors’ offices while our lives are bounced back and forth because of politics.

The Solution?
I continue to stress this solution because as constituents, we are promised so much by politicians.  From the Presidents of the United States, to our Senators and Congressmen, to our Governors, State Representatives, to our Mayors/Parish Presidents to out Council members and Aldermen.  We have been promised so much, only to find that the promises came with a few caveats, quid pro quos, or “were not even possibles”, but sounded good enough to get our votes down, and our hopes up, that we were going to essentially be made or remain whole, at least from a healthcare standpoint.

I am not trying to repeat myself, because I believe that I made myself clear.  This is very important.  While many of us are content to believe that the Affordable Healthcare Act is the law of the land, there are forces alive and in full force to ready to put this act out of its misery. And if timing serves them right, many of us will need to make sure that we have all of our final papers in order.  The rug could be pulled out from under us and we could possibly be without any coverage, whatsoever.  Our solution rests securely in contacting our representatives and let them know, that our healthcare needs to be maintained, and that we can’t be left wondering whether to choose between our health or our lives because of budget cuts or major changes to the Affordable Health Care Act.

The Future of Healthcare

Do we really know the future of healthcare?  From Medicare to Veterans Care, each have a yoke to carry when it comes to costs.  Government agencies look, supposedly, at everything when it comes time to trim the budget.  They look at education, law enforcement, infrastructure, even their beloved “pork barrel” projects in an effort to ensure the best use of tax payer dollars.  When it comes to businesses, their bottom line is shrinking.  Government regulations, including the Affordable Care Act, work relentlessly to put businesses at a great disadvantage in providing equitable benefits to their employees.  However, businesses are apparently becoming frustrated to where they are striking back, including cutting hours or laying off in order to make a profit.  And finally, we the consumers.

As consumers, our healthcare will be determined by our ability to actually afford healthcare, irrespective of the term “affordable”.  Even if we receive “free healthcare”, we are not without responsibility in terms of the outcome, where if we are caught between legislation that says we should receive healthcare regardless of pre-existing and current policies, we, the consumer, the patient, the constituent, are responsible with little to fall back on for help should be stuck out.

Pray
Going forward, I hope that many of us never have to experience a loss of healthcare.  I hope that we will always be able to receive the very best of care, regardless of our ability to pay.  But, given the fact that those who decide our fate, are the least likely to have to incur the trials or tribulations that may befall us, if I have said nothing else of importance here, I hope that you will continue to be in prayer.  Having worked in hospitals (non-medical positions), I have seen a tremendous number of people at their worst.  I have worked at 2 of the best healthcare facilities in this area.  Even I have been a patient and can tell you with no certainty that me leaving any medical facility was no guarantee.  They even make you sign a paper that indicates that you may die even if the treatment may not be life threatening.

My point is, we are not guaranteed life or even a healthy life.  No one can assure us that medical care will always be successful, but it should be, affordable.  We, as patients, consumers, constituents, should be able to receive the same level of care as those who decide our fates in the state legislatures and the House of Congress.  If complaints are that taxpayer dollars should not be spent exorbitantly, then let those who represent us receive the same level of care as they dictate through laws and policies.  But then, we still have to get past the insurance companies.  And in that case, we better pray, really, really hard.  Because even if we can get lawmakers to get a heart to care, insurance companies seem to always be ready to pull the plug.  Correct me, if I’m wrong.  Pray.
